Gemini Advanced Review (May 2026): 3.1 Pro Closes the Gap

Gemini 3.1 Pro (Feb 2026) gave Google a legitimate top-tier model — 1M context, deep Workspace integration, and the new Nano Banana 2 image generation. Is Google AI Pro at $19.99/month finally worth it?

Pros · 8

  • +Gemini 3.1 Pro is genuinely competitive with Claude/GPT
  • +1M token context window — largest available
  • +Deep Google Workspace integration
  • +Free tier is genuinely useful
  • +Multimodal across video/audio/images
  • +Real-time Google Search grounding
  • +Nano Banana 2 for image generation
  • +Deep Research with MCP support

Cons · 5

  • Personality less polished than Claude
  • Some safety filters still overly aggressive
  • Pro tier ($19.99) good value but Ultra ($249.99) is steep
  • Documentation lags OpenAI for developers
  • Gems feature less mature than Custom GPTs

The Bottom Line (May 2026)

The Gemini story flipped completely. From "embarrassing" in 2023 to "best on multiple dimensions" in 2026, the February 2026 release of Gemini 3.1 Pro put Google decisively in the top tier. Gemini wins decisively on context window size and Google ecosystem integration; competes credibly with GPT-5.5 and Claude on most tasks. For Google Workspace users, Gemini Advanced is now the obvious primary AI choice.

The Lineup (May 2026)

  • Gemini 3.1 Pro (Feb 19, 2026) — Flagship. 1M token context, improved reasoning scores, multimodal across text/audio/images/video/PDFs/code repos.
  • Gemini 3.1 Flash — Faster, cheaper, still highly capable. The recommended default for most tasks.
  • Gemini 3.1 Flash Lite (March 3, 2026) — Optimized for low-latency, high-volume.
  • Nano Banana 2 (Feb 26, 2026) — Image generation built on Gemini 3.1 Flash Image. Excellent text rendering, instruction following.
  • Gemma 4 (April 2, 2026) — Open-weights, purpose-built for advanced reasoning and agentic workflows.

The Killer Feature: 1M Token Context

Still the largest of any major model. In practice this enables:

  • Drop entire codebases (~30K lines) and ask for cross-file refactors
  • Feed 100+ customer interviews and ask for thematic synthesis with citations
  • Submit full books, multi-document legal contracts, hours of meeting transcripts
  • Work with feature-length video files (Gemini analyzes frame-by-frame)

This advantage is massive for research-heavy and document-heavy work. We've completed enterprise-scale analysis tasks in Gemini that simply weren't feasible in other models.

Google Workspace Integration

The strongest practical advantage. Gemini lives inside the apps where knowledge workers spend their days:

  • Gmail — "Help me write" generates drafts that match your tone after a few corrections
  • Google Docs — Sidebar generates outlines, rewrites paragraphs, answers questions about long docs
  • Google Sheets — Natural language formulas, auto-analysis, smart fills, chart suggestions
  • Google Meet — Real-time captions, post-meeting summaries with action items, "take notes for me"
  • NotebookLM — Source-grounded research notebooks (separate product, powered by Gemini)

If your team lives in Google Workspace, productivity gains from in-context AI are immediate and substantial.

Deep Research with MCP Support

Deep Research is Gemini's autonomous research agent. Plans, runs many searches, reads dozens of sources, produces structured reports. Recent additions:

  • MCP support — connects to your tools (databases, internal docs, APIs)
  • Native visualizations — generates charts and diagrams in reports
  • Long-horizon analytical workflows — multi-stage research tasks across hours

Competitive with OpenAI's Deep Research. For tasks needing tool integration, MCP support is a real differentiator.

Plans

  • Free — Gemini 3.1 Flash via gemini.google.com, integrated in Google products with usage limits.
  • Google AI Pro ($19.99/mo) — Gemini 3.1 Pro with higher limits, deeper Workspace integration, NotebookLM Pro, 2TB Drive, Gemini in Gmail/Docs/Sheets/Meet.
  • Google AI Ultra ($249.99/mo) — Highest limits, earliest features, Veo 3 video generation, Project Mariner browser agent, 30TB storage.
  • Google AI Studio — Free developer access for prototyping with very generous limits.
  • Vertex AI — Enterprise-grade API with fine-tuning, SLA, custom data.

Where It Falls Short

Personality

Claude has a distinctive voice — thoughtful, slightly playful, willing to push back. ChatGPT has its own quirks. Gemini still feels relatively bland. For tasks where AI's "voice" matters, this is a real disadvantage.

Safety Filters

Gemini occasionally refuses legitimate requests that ChatGPT and Claude handle without issue — particularly around health, security research, and sensitive (but not harmful) topics. Improved over 2025 but still a friction point.

Gems vs Custom GPTs

Gemini's Gems feature (custom AI experts) is functional but less mature than ChatGPT's Custom GPTs ecosystem. The library of community-built Gems is much smaller.

Ultra Tier Pricing

Google AI Ultra at $249.99/month is steep. Justified for power users specifically needing Veo 3, Project Mariner, and 30TB storage; otherwise stick with Pro.

Gemini vs Claude vs ChatGPT

Gemini wins: context window (1M tokens), Google ecosystem integration, video/audio analysis, free-tier value.

Claude wins: writing quality, careful reasoning, code review, intellectual honesty.

ChatGPT wins: agentic computer use, image generation, plugin ecosystem, voice mode.

Honest take: if you live in Google Workspace, Gemini is now likely your best AI. Otherwise, Claude or GPT-5.5 is probably better as primary, with Gemini Advanced as complement for long-document work.

Verdict

Gemini Advanced went from "embarrassing" to "legitimately one of the top three" in two years. For Google ecosystem users, it's now the default — the integration is too good to ignore at $19.99/month. For everyone else, it's a powerful complement to Claude or ChatGPT, particularly when you need 1M context. Ultra at $249 is over-priced unless you specifically need Veo 3 and Project Mariner. Score: 4.5/5.
