iOS 27 Preview: A Gemini-Powered Siri Moves Into the Dynamic Island and Gets Its Own ChatGPT-Style App
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has published renderings and details of iOS 27 ahead of Apple’s June 8 WWDC, centered on a long-promised Siri overhaul. The rebuilt assistant is said to run on a custom Google Gemini model — reported at roughly 1.2 trillion parameters — hosted on Apple’s Private Cloud Compute, living inside the Dynamic Island and gaining a standalone, ChatGPT-style app with chat history, voice and document upload.
Apple’s long-delayed Siri reset is shaping up to be the centerpiece of iOS 27, according to a detailed preview published May 28 by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, complete with renderings of the redesigned assistant. The report lands days before Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference on June 8, where the company is expected to make it official across iPhone, iPad and Mac.
The most consequential detail is what now powers Siri. Rather than relying solely on its own models, Apple is said to run the rebuilt assistant on a custom Google Gemini model — reported at roughly 1.2 trillion parameters — hosted on Apple’s own Private Cloud Compute infrastructure so that queries stay within Apple’s privacy perimeter rather than flowing to Google’s servers. It is an unusual arrangement: Apple licensing a rival’s frontier model to fix the product that has most visibly lagged the AI wave.
The interface is being rethought too. Bloomberg’s renderings show Siri living inside the iPhone’s Dynamic Island as an always-available layer, plus a dedicated, ChatGPT-style app with chat history, a text box, voice mode and the ability to upload documents and images — much like ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude. A new “Search or Ask” surface, reportedly summoned by swiping down from the top of the screen, blends system search with conversational queries.
The AI push extends beyond Siri. The Photos app is said to gain generative editing tools including “Reframe” and “Extend” that can recompose a shot or fill in missing parts of an image, alongside an enhanced Clean Up. Apple is also said to be building system-level AI web search, a Pro Camera app with advanced manual controls and Siri voice integration, and AI writing and grammar help woven through the OS.
The reporting fits a clear pattern of signals from Cupertino. BitsMinds noted last week that Apple had quietly registered genai.apple.com two weeks before WWDC, telegraphing exactly this kind of reset. As always with pre-WWDC previews, the specifics — names, pricing and especially the Gemini parameter count — may shift before Apple takes the stage, and the company has a history of holding features back. But the direction is unmistakable: after a rough year for Apple Intelligence, the company is betting a borrowed frontier model can finally make Siri competitive.
